Teachers’ Day celebrated across India
Teachers’ Day is being observed across India on September 5, with schools, colleges and educational institutions organising programmes to recognise the contribution of teachers.
The day is observed every year on the birth anniversary of former President, philosopher and educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The occasion has become a day for students to express their appreciation for teachers and recognise their role in education and personal development.
Schools across the country are holding cultural programmes, discussions and other activities to mark the occasion. In many institutions, students are taking part in special programmes organised for their teachers.
The role of teachers has also been changing with the growing use of digital technology in education. Students today have access to information through smartphones, online platforms and artificial intelligence tools, making the teacher’s role increasingly focused on guidance, understanding and helping students use information responsibly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while marking Teachers’ Day, paid tribute to Dr Radhakrishnan and highlighted the contribution of teachers to society. He also interacted with recipients of the National Teachers’ Awards and discussed issues connected with education and the development of children.
The occasion comes at a time when schools are balancing traditional classroom teaching with new forms of digital learning. Educators are increasingly being asked to encourage curiosity, creativity and practical learning alongside academic performance.
Teachers’ Day continues to provide an opportunity to recognise the work of educators and their contribution to shaping students beyond the classroom.
The day is marked nationally on September 5, while World Teachers’ Day is observed internationally on October 5.
