Modak demand rises in Delhi as Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations begin

NEW DELHI: The arrival of the Ganesh Chaturthi festive season has triggered a sharp rise in demand for modaks in Delhi, with traditional sweet makers, home chefs and food businesses preparing large quantities of the popular offering.

At the Maharashtra Stall in Dilli Haat INA, around 1,000 modaks are being prepared every day to meet the growing demand from customers celebrating the festival.

The sweet has a special place in Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and is traditionally offered to Lord Ganesha. While the classic preparation is made using rice flour and a sweet filling, modern versions have expanded the range of flavours and ingredients available to customers.

The increased demand is also benefiting home-based food businesses and local chefs, who are receiving bulk orders during the festive period.

The popularity of modaks reflects the continuing role of traditional food in India’s celebrations. Festivals often create seasonal demand for dishes that are closely associated with particular cultural and religious occasions.

In Delhi, the demand also reflects the city’s diverse food culture, where regional traditions from different parts of the country are increasingly available to a wider audience.

Food businesses are adapting to changing consumer preferences by offering different varieties of traditional sweets while retaining familiar flavours and preparation methods.

The growing orders for modaks also provide an opportunity for small food entrepreneurs and home chefs to expand their seasonal businesses. Many such businesses rely on festival periods to introduce speciality products and reach new customers.

With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, sweet shops and home kitchens are expected to remain busy preparing traditional offerings.

The renewed demand for modaks shows how festive celebrations continue to support traditional Indian food practices while also creating opportunities for small food businesses and home-based entrepreneurs.
