Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute has launched 3D Digital Mammography (Tomosynthesis) machine (FUJIFILM Amulet Innovality Japan), the “state of the art” first comprehensive mammography machine in India, a new highly advanced breast cancer diagnostic machine that can detect breast cancers as small 1 mm size.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Nandamuri Balakrishna has expressed concern on the increasing number of breast cancer cases among women. Further explaining that the cancer can be cured, if detected in early stages and treated appropriately, the 10 year survival rate for breast cancer is greater than 90 percent, making it essential to provide women the best screening devices. He revealed various measures undertaken by BIACH&RI to detect the cancer early and the introduction of new Mammogram Machine is also part of the effort. While acknowledging the mere introduction of machines such as Mammograms may not prevent cancer, but definitely can save many lives and families by detecting cancer at an early stage which can be curable, especially in women with strong family history and high genetic risk of developing breast cancer, he opined.
Earlier speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest to the function Dr Tulasi Devi Polavarapu has explained how Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the world and about 155,000 new cases are detected annually in India. She expressed concern that the recent Breast cancer projection states that the total number of cases will go as high as 18 lakhs by 2020.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, Member, Board of Trustees, BIACH&RI has explained the need to have such latest technology. Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, Hyderabad has brought this latest breast imaging technology to India with a motive to provide modern diagnostic tools that to it affordable cost for the Indian women to avail the most sophisticated and the comprehensive breast imaging technology and management services in world at their door step.
It is the most sensitive and specific breast imaging technology with 50 microns image resolution, least radiation and extremely comfortable breast compression device. In 3D Mammography, multiple images of the breast are obtained at 1 mm intervals unlike the conventional mammogram where entire breast is viewed in a single image. This enables better detection and characterization of smaller cancers, micro-calcifications and premalignant lesions (DCIS), which may be overlooked in a conventional mammogram. In spite of multiple sections, the time taken for the procedure remains essentially the same (4 seconds).
The program was attended by Sri Nandamuri Balakrishna, Chairman, BIACH&RI; Dr Tulasi Devi Polavarapu, Member, Trust Board, BIACH&RI; Dr Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, Member, Trust Board, BIACH&RI; Sri Sri Bharath Mithukumalli, Member, Trust Board, BIACH&RI; Sri JSR Prasad, Member, Trust Board, BIACH&RI; Dr RV Prabhakar Rao, CEO, BIACH&RI; Dr TS Rao, Medical Director, BIACH&RI; Sri G Ravi Kumar, COO, BIACH&RI; DR Kalpana Raghunath, Associate Director, Academic, BIACH&RI; Dr. Phani Koteswara Rao, Medical Superintendent, BIACH&RI; Dr K.
