Global Hospital, Parel and Mumbai cops together distribute roses to bikers on World Head Injury Day

Global Hospital, Parel on the occasion of World Head Injury Day distributed roses alongside Mumbai cops to bring awareness among the citizens on road safety. The initiative was aimed at creating awareness among 2-wheeler motorist about road safety, importance of usage of helmets and most importantly, following lane discipline.
Chief Executive Officer of Global Hospital, Parel, Dr Vivek Talaulikar led the initiative along with members of the hospital and police. The drive started at Dr E Borges road and at the signals the teams gave away red rose along with a wrist band to the people who were seen without wearing a helmet. More than 100 people were on the Parel Bridge along with placards and slogan boards, to spread awareness to safeguard the life for their loved ones. (This event is planned near the Bata showroom so that we don’t disturb traffic on the parel bridge)
The day long (2 hours) initiative was conducted at Dr. E Borges Road besides BATA showroom, next to Global Hospital, Parel. The team educated motorists about traffic rules, the importance of wearing a helmet and also about safe road practices. With the growing number of road accidents in the country, the initiative was a major push to create awareness as well as educate the public on how life-threatening head injuries can be prevented by adopting safe riding practices. The use of helmets plays a crucial role in preventing damage to the brain during accidents.
One serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 die on Indian roads every hour. 1214 road crashes occur every day in India. Two wheelers account for 25% of total road crash deaths. As per the stats, 162 people died in road accidents involving motorcycles in 2015, in 2016 the death toll in motorcycle accidents in Mumbai was 125, while 89 people died in 2017, another 49 lost their lives in 2018 (till May) in fatal accidents involving motorcycles.
Dr Ajit Baviskar, Head of Emergency said, “Majority of the people who suffer accidental head injuries get medical intervention after the loss of “golden hour”, which lessens their chances of survival. There is definite evidence of unimproved functional outcomes in patients arriving within 60 minutes of injury time. This happens due to unrecognized and untreated hypoxia, hypovolemia. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the major cause to damage or destruction of brain tissue due to a blow to the head, resulting from an assault, a car crash, a gunshot wound, a fall, or the like.”
Dr Suresh Sankhla, Neuro Surgeon at Global Hospital Parel said, “Over half of all reported traumatic brain injuries are the result of an automobile accident. Such brain injury can occur as a result of any force that penetrates or fractures the skull areas which are susceptible during an accident. There may or may not be an open wound to the skull due to the accident, however in automobile accidents, the skull may not necessarily need to have been penetrated or fractured for a traumatic brain injury to occur.”
Dr Vivek Talaulikar, CEO of Global Hospital, Parel in his remarks said, “It is surprising to know that around 70% of Indians don’t wear a helmet. These statistics are alarming, it’s not just a figure to worry the most but it is about the lives lost and their families left behind. Though it is mandatory for the riders or the children’s sitting behind to wear a helmet along with the necessary safety gear in place while travelling on bikes, implementation of it is not rigorously practiced on a day to day basis. We believe that Global Hospital’s initiative will spreadawareness among masses and reduce the incidence through accidents.
Mr Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said, “Fatalities of two-wheelers are more as riders lack discipline and most deaths reported in the statistics were due to the rider negligence. It can be reduced if all riders wear helmets as a rule. Majority of the accidents happened due to an error in judgement, over speeding, Hit and run have been a major problem in the city and accidents of this nature take place especially on the highways of the city. It is noted that two-wheelers account for maximum deaths in road accidents in Mumbai. Thus, to avoid such severe injuries “Change Your Mind” because is not only a person who suffer in an accident but also their families who are always waiting for them at home. Be Wise and safeguard your life, your life is in your hand”
