Rani Mukerji brings classic Indian saree style to New York Fashion Week

Rani Mukerji brought a distinctly Indian fashion statement to New York Fashion Week with a minimalist black saree at designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s showcase in Manhattan.

The actor chose a simple black chiffon saree with a sleeveless blouse, keeping the overall styling understated. Minimal jewellery, a black-and-gold clutch and a classic watch completed the look.

Her appearance offered a contrast to the elaborate gowns and experimental silhouettes often seen at major international fashion events. The saree retained a traditional Indian identity while using a clean and contemporary approach to styling.

Sabyasachi’s New York presentation, titled “Bengal Byzantine Broadway”, brought together Indian craftsmanship and global fashion influences. The collection featured traditional elements alongside denim, Western silhouettes and other contemporary designs.

The designer’s return to New York Fashion Week also marked a significant moment for Indian fashion on the international stage. The presentation featured 72 looks and included models and personalities from the global fashion industry.

Jewellery was another major part of the showcase, with Sabyasachi introducing work connected to a multi-year collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Rani Mukerji’s saree look added a familiar Indian silhouette to the international event and highlighted the continuing appeal of traditional clothing in contemporary fashion.

The actor’s choice also reflects a wider trend in which Indian celebrities are using sarees and other heritage garments for international appearances rather than limiting them to domestic festive occasions.

The understated styling allowed the fabric and silhouette to remain the focus, demonstrating how a traditional saree can be presented in a modern setting without extensive embellishment.

Her appearance at the New York showcase has consequently drawn attention to the saree as a versatile garment that can move between Indian cultural occasions and international fashion platforms.
